Dobbs Gets Daily Radio Show Despite Fact-Twisting and Hate

There's been a flurry of activity surrounding Lou Dobbs since our protest...

If you haven't read it yet, check out the seminal NYTimes article attacking Dobbs' journalistic integrity by David Leonhard: “Truth, Fiction, and Lou Dobbs". In this article Leonhard exposes a few of the most salient examples of Dobbs' demagoguery: his misrepresentation of the number of leprosy and tuberculosis cases in the U.S. which he then attributed to undocumented immigrants without any scientific evidence; his gross misrepresentation of the numbers of undocumented immigrants in federal and state prisons; and his insinuations of a Mexican conspiracy to invade the U.S. and retake certain territories.

Numerous journalists have attacked Lou Dobbs for his inaccuracies and lack of journalistic integrity; even more immigrant rights groups have been vocal in their outrage over his hateful messages. However, mainstream media venues like CNN continue to feature Dobbs as a credible journalist, and now he has signed a contract for a 3 hour, daily radio show.

Also check out last week's NYTimes article by David Brooks, “Follow the Fundamentals”. Brooks perceptively breaks down Dobbs’ rhetoric, pointing out that it “rests on fears that the America we once knew is bleeding away. And that’s just not true.”

Also last week: Journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez interviewed Dobbs and confronted him about these lies on their show, Democracy Now. They then went on to highlight his multiple connections to the white nationalist hate group, Council of Conservative Citizens. If you don’t have the patience to watch the entire interview with Dobbs, take a look at Amy Goodman’s weekly column summarizing their findings: http://www.alternet.org/rights/69769/.

Congressman Gutierrez was also featured as a guest on Dobbs' show last week. It was an excellent interview. Check out blogger Kyle Debs' video here. They spent a good amount of time debating the merits of his proposal for immigration reform, the STRIVE Act. It was an excellent debate that showed just how people like Cong. Gutierrez are working hard to find solutions to our broken immigration system, while Lou Dobbs does nothing but demagogue and manipulate the American public with his inflammatory rhetoric and false statistics.

ICIRR Leader Probes Clinton on Immigration

Last Saturday marked the first annual Heartland Presidential Forum in Iowa. Four busloads of ICIRR community members braved the icy conditions to show solidarity with diverse organizations across the Midwest. Coming at a crucial time in the campaign calendar, the Forum allowed community leaders to ask the candidates tough questions about everything from housing to immigration reform.

ICIRR leader Billy Lawless asked Hillary Clinton whether she would commit to passing comprehensive immigration reform soon after taking office. Here's an msnbc blogger's report:

Asked by Coalition member Billy Lawless if she would address immigration reform during her first 100 days in office, Clinton did not offer a definite "yes," saying, “Well, you've got to get the Congress to pass the legislation." As hoots crescendoed from the rear of the room, she continued, "The president can do as much as possible, which I will do."

Coalition staff member Ricardo Serrano described the Chicago-based group as a pro-immigrant rights coalition of ethnic and service organizations throughout the state of Illinois. The organization has a heavy Hispanic representation but also includes members of European and Asian groups. Lawless, the man who asked the question that prompted the boos, is an Irish immigrant.

Serrano said that the group has galvanized around opposition to Illinois congressman Rahm Emmanuel, who "pulled a 180 on us" by failing on his promise to push comprehensive immigration reform through the Congress earlier this year. Serrano is concerned that Clinton's recent remarks on drivers' licenses for illegals -- on which he says she has "stumbled, if not completely backtracked" -- might indicate her willingness to brush off immigrant communities.

Perhaps 'the Hillary boo' may call her Party's attention to the fact that a fair, swift, and humane immigration reform is a top priority for our communities- and our nation. It is not an issue that can be ignored or swept aside to a candidate's second term, as Democratic leader Rahm Emanuel (5th Congressional district- IL) has repeatedly asserted.

Community Leaders Confront Anti-immigrant Pundit

Chicago community leaders gathered in front of Barnes & Noble last night to protest TV pundit Lou Dobbs and his dangerous manipulation of the facts. Those who rallied outside the bookstore carried signs reading, “Immigrants are laborers, not lepers.” The signs referred to Dobbs' habitual linking of immigration to a fictitious rise in leprocy.

After Dobbs' book talk, Presbyterian minister Jennifer Hill asked about the hundreds of men, women, and children that die every year attempting to cross the border. Dobbs yelled at Jennifer to “Seek redemption for not blaming the Mexican government for their deaths.” Seeing that Dobbs would not engage respectfully (earlier in the evening, a supporter screamed, “Hispanics are not like us, they’re not white,” with no response from Dobbs), half of the crowd left.

Meanwhile, on CNN, Dobbs exploded over ICIRR Director Joshua Hoyt’s suggestion that “the immigration debate has descended into the world of bullies, bigots, and demagogues." Judge for yourself- watch a clip of Dobbs supporters, or read the transcripts of Lou interviewing Congressman Gutierrez here.

Papers Confront Party Leader on Immigration

The mainstream media is now confronting Democratic Party Leader Rahm Emanuel (5th Congressional District- IL) about his "political cowardice" on immigration. A recent New York Times editorial, referring to Congressman Emanuel, states, "The natural allies of immigrants have been cowed into mumbling or silent avoidance." This at a time when, according to a recent Chicago Sun-Times column, "Republicans are having a field day taking a hard line and blaming illegal immigrants for everything wrong with this country."

Enough is enough. It's time for both party's leaders to stand up for what is right, make an honest effort to fix our broken laws, and denounce the scapegoating of immigrants for political gain. The American public, and the people whose hard work fuels our economy, deserve no less.

Ads Attack Emanuel for Failure to Support Immigrants

The progressive blogosphere lit up this week with news that Democratic Party Leader Rahm Emanuel (5th Congressional District- IL) supports the SAVE Act (HR4088), legislation that takes an enforcement-only approach to immigration reform- with no path for the undocumented to gain legal status.

To the left is a copy of the Spanish newspaper ad published in Hoy on November 15th, 2007, that asks the question, Why is Congressman Emanuel Betraying our Friends and Families? Read the full text in English, or download a copy in Korean. The ads were paid for by Blue America and approved by the Illinois Coalition.

Immigrant advocates and netroots activists were already shocked by Emanuel's remarks in last week's Chicago Tribune article, where he called immigration "the new third rail of politics." This came just months after the Congressman pledged to move a comprehensive reform bill forward last spring. Listen to the NPR story here.

The ad urges people to Call Congressman Emanuel now at (773) 267-5926 and tell him, "Stop being afraid to fight for immigrants, and start acting like a real leader." Send a fax or email to your Representative, saying NO to SAVE.

DREAM Act Will Not Be Heard- Youth Still Need a Solution

ICIRR is deeply disappointed with this morning's cloture vote, which prevented the DREAM Act from moving forward in the Senate. The vote was 52-44 in favor of considering the bill, with bipartisan support, but this fell short of the 60 votes needed to proceed.

Senator Durbin, on the floor of the Senate, stated that The DREAM Act presents us with a choice where “we can allow a generation of immigrant students with great potential and ambitions to contribute more fully to our society and national security, or we can relegate them to a future in the shadows, which would be a loss for all Americans.” (Congressional Record-Senate, July 13th, 2007, S9202).

DREAM Act Needs Your Support- Act Now

The DREAM Act may be considered as amendment to H.R.1585. This could mean victory for the hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth affected by the DREAM Act- but only if we call our Senators today and every day this week to let them know how important this is for our community!

Take Action! Please make two calls now, and then every day this week:

1. Thank Sen. Durbin for moving the DREAM Act forward: (202) 224-2152
2. Ask Sen. Obama to work hard to pass it: (202) 224-2854
3. Send an email to Congress here! (no longer active)

Despite broad support for the DREAM Act from members of Congress of both parties, anti-immigrant activists are turning their message machines against it and doing all they can to kill the measure. The Senate could vote on DREAM as early as next week, so please make calls in support starting TODAY (outside Illinois, call 1-800-828-0498), and forward this video widely!
